Home Folk High School
Home Folk High School is a concept that saw the light of day in 2019 at Nordfyns Højskole. The goal was to get people to meet across genders, ages, cultures and interests – and it was a great success. Since then, several of these have been held both physically and online.
Togetherness on common themes
Home folk high school is a kind of maggi cube of the atmosphere and togetherness that exists at a folk high school.
You are together around a common third, a theme that is relevant to the participants, and a trusting and open space is created with room for both the individual and the community.
Home Folk High School is good for:
- Creating empathy
- To create greater inclusiveness for each other as people
- To provide new perspectives on life, both on a personal and global level
- Creating community across our planet
How does a home folk high school work?
The gathering naturally takes place around a meal or a good snack. First, the focus is on everyone being present in the room, then a presentation, then the important group conversations, which are the soul of the home folk high school, and finally joint rounding off.
You can use the home folk high school to…
The home folk high school is a short break from everyday life. Instead, the focus is on being, both personally and in the community you are a part of.
When we gather across gender, age, culture, etc., we get a chance to listen to, share with, and learn from people who have different ideas, experiences, and resources than our own. When the conversation is added to the rules and guidelines of the home folk high school, people immediately begin to share openly and honestly about their lives – for the benefit of everyone. As a Chinese high school student once said, “Wow, that made us forget our phones”
Who is Mette Højland?
My name is Mette Højland and I am the co-founder of the association “Man First – Life Dialogues”.
I have lived my life in the free schools – both as a child and as an adult. I graduated from the Free Teacher Training School in Ollerup, and have worked for 21 years as a folk high school teacher. I am deeply touched when people meet in trust, so it has been my focal point as a facilitator and teacher.
I have traveled a lot in the world and also been on countless journeys inwards in an insatiable curiosity about what it means to be human and live a life for joy and benefit both for myself and my surroundings.
On these journeys, I found new nuances in the Grundtvigian that give me a large and rich interpersonal and spiritual foundation. The key to the foundation is about conversation, about being able to be present, about listening and about creating together, both with each other and that which is greater than us.
We are happy to come out and facilitate a home folk high school at your company or in your network.

What do the participants say?
”I was very touched to see all the different faces on the screen. Once again, I am surprised at what the conversation can do. Today, a whole new space opened up in me. ”
“I’m not usually good at talking, but here I felt safe because people didn’t interrupt each other and my opinion was respected.”
